Luther College is a four-year, residential liberal arts institution of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, located in Decorah, which is situated in the US state of Iowa and serves as the county seat of Winneshiek County, having a population of more than 8000 inhabitants, as estimated during the 2000 census.
Luther was officially established in 1861, tracing its roots back to October, 1857, when the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church created a college to supply ministers for Norwegian congregations in the Upper Midwest. It currently offers its students over 60 majors and pre-professional programs leading to bachelor of arts degree, its most popular educational programs being the ones in education, biology and music.
Luther's athletic teams are known as the Norse, and they compete in 10 men's and 9 women's varsity sports, in NCAA Division III. Their distinctive colors are blue and white.
Kurt Heinecke - primary music composer for the Veggie Tales series, Robert E. A. Lee - head of the Lutheran Church's film production and producer of `A Time for Burning`, Dr. Michael Osterholm - professor and director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) at the University of Minnesota, member of the National Science Advisory Board on Biosecurity, epidemiologist, biosecurity expert, and author, and Jacob Aall Ottesen Preus - 20th Governor of Minnesota, are among Luther's noteworthy alumni.
